Designing with Metal for the Hardscape

Metals are ubiquitous in today’s hardscape and appear in a wide range of site and streetscape applications. This course explores the most commonly specified metals, their appropriate uses, and the manufacturing methods behind them.

Participants will also gain insight into the custom design process, learning how designers and manufacturers collaborate to translate conceptual ideas into durable, buildable cast-metal solutions.

Topics Include:

  • Metals in the public realm
  • Ground-plane vs. vertical-plane applications
  • Accessibility considerations in metal design
  • Slip and trip performance in real-world conditions
  • Casting fundamentals
  • Common cast metals and typical uses
  • Oxidation, patina, and long-term aging
  • Casting vs. fabrication
  • Working with mixed metals

Course formats:

Accreditation:

  • AIA CES approved — 1.5 LU / HSW
  • LA CES™ approved — 1.5 PDH / HSW
  • Accepted by 25+ additional associations

Digging Into Trench

An increased focus on stormwater management has led to a growing need for trench drain systems across a wide range of project types. When designing these systems, selecting the appropriate drain type, components, and materials is critical to meeting both performance and design goals.

This course was created to provide a real-world understanding of the variables that influence trench drain design and how to apply best practices across different site conditions.

Topics Include:

  • Trench drain types and materials
  • Slope considerations
  • ADA compliance
  • Flow rates
  • Load ratings
  • Fastening systems
  • Grate materials and design
  • Mitigating corrosion
  • Radiused trench design

Course formats:

Accreditation:

  • AIA CES approved — 1.5 LU / HSW
  • LA CES™ approved — 1.5 PDH / HSW
  • Accepted by 25+ additional associations
