REGISTER COVER GUIDE
Register covers are often overlooked, but the right choice can elevate a space.
This resource provides an overview of Iron Age register covers, including design considerations, materials, measuring, installation guidance, and answers to common questions—so you can select and specify with confidence.
MATERIALS & LONGEVITY
Why Iron Age register covers look better—and last longer—than typical architectural registers
Most architectural register covers are fabricated from flat sheet metal—cut and welded into place—which results in a thin, utilitarian appearance with little surface detail.
Iron Age register covers are cast metal. Casting allows us to create a three-dimensional, sculptural piece with depth, texture, and visual interest that simply isn’t possible with fabricated products.
That added dimension gives our register covers a sense of weight and permanence—they feel intentional, not disposable. Cast metal also holds its shape over time, resisting bending or warping, and develops character rather than showing wear.
Whether installed in hardwood floors, tile, stone, or concrete, our register covers are designed to complement surrounding materials rather than compete with them.
Louvered Dampers
Louvered dampers—the adjustable slatted devices mounted behind a register cover to control airflow—are available on our website for the most common register sizes and are sold separately.
GUARANTEED FOR LIFE:
Every Iron Age register cover is guaranteed against breakage for life. Crafted from solid cast metal and designed for long-term performance, our register covers are made to remain part of your space—not something you’ll need to replace.
MEASURING REGISTER COVERS
How to determine the correct size for a clean accurate fit
Choosing the right size register cover starts with measuring the opening—not the existing cover. Iron Age register cover sizes are based on the inside dimensions of the opening in your floor, wall, or ceiling.
For replacement installations:
Remove your existing register cover to expose the opening. Measure the width and length of the opening itself. These dimensions should match the inside measurement of the register cover you select.
While measuring the opening, it’s also important to consider the outside dimensions of the register cover. Outside dimensions can be found on the downloadable spec sheets on each product page. If the opening is close to a wall, cabinet, or other obstruction, make sure there is enough clearance around the opening to accommodate the overall size of the cover.
For new installations:
Measure carefully, then cut the duct opening to match the inside dimensions of the register cover you plan to use. Be sure to allow adequate space around the opening for the outside dimensions as well. Taking the time to measure accurately upfront will help ensure a clean installation and proper fit.
HELPFUL MEASURING TIP:
All register cover sizes listed on our website (Interlaken 4” x 10”, Locust 6” x 12”, etc.) refer to the inside measurement, making it easy to find the right size for your opening.
INSTALLING REGISTER COVERS
Simple steps for a clean, secure installation
Installing Iron Age register covers is straightforward and can typically be completed with basic tools. Louvered dampers—which control airflow—are available for the most common register sizes and are sold separately. They are installed behind the register cover as outlined below.
How to Install the Louver and Register Cover
Step 1: Select the correct louver
Choose a louvered damper that matches the inside dimensions of your opening.
Step 2: Set the louver depth
Place the louver deep enough in the duct so the register cover can sit flush on the surface above without interfering with the louver’s movement.
Step 3: Secure the louver
Attach the louver to the perimeter of the opening using coarse-thread drywall screws. This keeps the louver stable while allowing airflow to be adjusted as needed.
Step 4: Install the register cover
Set the Iron Age register cover over the opening. All register covers include drill points on the underside that can be drilled out if a screw-down installation is required, such as for wall or ceiling applications.
Step 5: Send us a picture!
Take a photo of your beautiful register cover in its new surroundings and send it to us at [email protected]. If we select your photo to use on our website, we’ll send you a register cover of your choice.

MATERIALS & FINISH OPTIONS
Choosing the right look—and performance—for your space
Iron Age register covers are made from solid cast metal and finished to perform well in residential interiors. Material and finish choices affect not only appearance, but also durability, maintenance, and how the register ages over time.
Standard Materials
Our standard register covers are cast from ductile iron, selected for its strength, stability, and ability to hold fine detail. Cast iron maintains its shape over time, resists bending or warping, and develops character rather than showing wear.
For projects with specific aesthetic or environmental requirements, custom register covers may also be available in other metals, such as cast silicon bronze or cast aluminum, at an additional cost.
Standard Finishes:
Iron Age register covers are available with the following standard finishes:
- Baked-On-Oil—A traditional finish that highlights the natural texture of the casting and will continue to develop patina over time.
- Powder Coat—Available in Black, Bronze, or Silver for a more uniform, contemporary appearance.
Each finish offers a different balance of visual character and maintenance considerations, depending on where the register will be installed.
Custom Finishes:
Custom powder coat colors and specialty finishes are available for an additional cost. These options can be useful when coordinating with specific interior palettes or architectural details. Contact us to discuss available colors, lead times, and suitability for your application.

CUSTOM SIZES & SPECIAL APPLICATIONS
Understanding your options—and the tradeoffs involved
While Iron Age register covers are available in a range of standard sizes, some projects call for something outside the norm. Custom solutions are possible, but the approach—and cost—will depend on how far the request departs from standard sizing and geometry.
Option 1: Fully Custom Cast Register Covers
We can create entirely custom cast register covers, including new sizes or patterns developed specifically for a project. Because casting requires a dedicated pattern or mold, this option entails upfront tooling costs that typically run into the thousands. For this reason, fully custom casting is usually best suited for projects where design intent clearly outweighs tooling cost considerations.
Option 2: Cut or Fabricated Register Covers
For custom sizes where sculptural relief is less critical, register covers can be laser- or water-jet cut from flat metal. This approach is more cost-effective than creating a new casting pattern, but results in a flatter appearance compared to our cast designs.
Option 3: Adapting Existing Iron Age Products
In some cases, larger or non-standard openings can be accommodated by adapting one of our existing drainage grates for use as a register cover. This is often the most cost-effective solution and allows projects to achieve a custom result while leveraging proven patterns and materials.
